The year of romanticism
"The world turns: from Mendelssohn to Schumann" was our last programme of the 2009-2010 season of Van Swieten Society and, at the same time, still functions as springboard to the next season. Then we linked the Mendelssohn year 2009 to the Schumann year 2010 by playing quartets of both. Expanding the link, we play a programme centred around Chopin, whose year of birth (1810) coincides with Schumann's. Both celebrating composers mark the start of romanticism.

Mozart, who also has his own programme in the 2010-2011 season, was called a romanticism in his age. In Beethoven and some of his contemporaries, we hear how the middle class began to determine musical life. Mendelssohn and Schubert are delightful connecting figures. But with Schumann and Chopin, romanticism shows its true growth.

The Van Swieten Society has followed this process closely and deliberately in its programmes. Next to being on exploratory expedition, we strive to reach our ideal: we search for the inspiration, the sounds, the images and forms, in short, for the esthetics of the composers of early times.

For more information of the programmes in season 2010-2011, please see 'Agenda', our VSS Courant or www.vanswietensociety.nl.

Finnish early music
Tuija Hakkila gave me a few of her recent recordings: music for piano solo of the four Finnish Brothers Lithander (all around 1800) and violin sonatas of the Finnish composer Byström (1772-1839). Beautiful performance, and these works are true discoveries: completely unknown music from the periphery of European music life, but very much worth it.
Alba Records 179 (Lithander) and 221 (Byström).

The Dutch programme in retrospect
The Dutch programme of Van Swieten Society contained beautiful, interesting and funny works. The public asked us several times if we would make a recording. Indeed a nice idea!

All together: there is really a lot of Dutch music worthy to be taken from the archives. We will do it again, we are thinking of a romantic Dutch programme this time.
