The Young Genius
The new CD of the Van Swieten Society, the third issued on the Quintone label, features three pieces of chamber music by the young Felix Mendelssohn. His Sextet has a misleading late opus number (Op. 110), but it dates from 1824. The Sonata for clarinet and fortepiano is a little known gem, also composed in 1824, performed with Frank van den Brink on clarinet. The 1821 Piano Trio in C minor features the violin, viola and fortepiano.
Musing on the Ocean
One of Britains best known sopranos, Lynne Dawson, presents her choice from Ludwig van Beethoven's arrangements of Irish, Scottish and Welsh folk songs on the latest CD of members of the Van Swieten Society. From this treasure trove 22 songs can be heard in her partnership with Alida Schut, violin, Jaap ter Linden, cello, and Bart van Oort, fortepiano. This new recording on Berlin Classics appeared in August 2009 in co-production with Deutschlandfunk (Cologne).
